Arthas, The Lich King

Helmet

For the cap of the helmet, I made a duct tape pattern of my head. For the cheek pieces, I drew everything out and undercut the back side of the foam. This allowed me to glue in small pieces that form the ridges that you see on the outside. I drew the spike details, then cut them all out at a 45 degree angle. To keep the helmet in shape there's a wire skeleton running from the top down the cheek pieces.

Pauldrons

My initial plan was to use expanding foam for both, but once I got everything to the right shape, they were too heavy. This, however, gave me a perfect base to pattern off of. So after my duct tape patterning, I remade them in EVA foam. The spikes were made from triangles with the edges cut at 45 degrees. The skull, along with the rest of the skulls on the armor, is made of styrofoam and was bought from a Halloween store. The pauldrons attach directly to the cuirass underneath the cape.

Belt

The belt is flat and clips together in the back. I used a hot wire cutter to cut the skull flat, then glued it to the middle. All the domes have their edges cut at 45 degrees and were formed with a heat gun.

Other Armor

Everything was patterned off of duct tape patterns of my body. All the details and carving was added with my dremel. All the straps were made of faux leather, sewn to nylon strapping, and glued to the armor.

Shoes

The shoes were patterned off of an old pair that I had. After recreating them in EVA foam, I used several types of glue and a couple different anchor points for the skulls since I knew they were in high wear areas.

Frostmourne

I traced an image of the sword in Inkscape to make the template. After getting the basic shape cut out and sanded down with my dremel, I carved the ram skulls and horns out of a few blocks of EVA foam. I wanted the eyes to glow so I found a replacement for led headlights and wired it into the base sword. For access to the light for maintenance and battery changes, I left the ram skulls detached. They're held in place by neodymium magnets and can pop off when I need them to. After painting, I decided I wanted the runes to stick out more so I back filled them all with hot glue.

Fabric

I knew this armor would be hot, so I wanted to try a mesh type fabric for the under shirt. The gloves and pants were sewn off a generic patterns and had fur added to them later. The chainmail is a printed fabric by Yaya Han. All of the scales for the sleeves were cut, painted, and glued individually. For the part that hangs from the belt, I wanted it to have more detail so I drew up a few variations of souls and airbrushed them on.

I enjoyed making Arthas' cosplay. Everything was painted with an air brush because I got one shortly before starting this cosplay. This was also only my third time dealing with lights.
